AUSTIN,
Texas -- Former University of Texas diver Justin Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) has been named the 2001-02 Verizon Academic
Men's At-Large Team All-American of the Year, as announced on Tuesday in a voting by the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA). The at-large squad is comprised of 45 student-athletes, with 17 first-team selections, as well
as 15 second-team and 13 third-team honorees. A two-time Big 12 Champion on the platform (2001-02), Dumais is a finance
major and holds a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA). Dumais transferred to UT after spending his first two seasons
at USC (1997-99), where he was twice named Pac-10 Diver of the Year. An 11-time All-American, Dumais helped lead
Texas to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2001 and '02. (4th Picture)

Soldati, a 1998 graduate, won the bronze medal in the women's three-meter competition with a score of 330.33. She was
sitting in second heading into the final dive when China's Guo Jing Jing nailed her final dive to win the competition and
push Soldati into third. "Its great for her," said Indiana University Head Diving Coach Dr. Jeff Huber. "It is her highest
finish in international competition and I am real happy for her. She should be really pleased with herself. She has worked
real hard and truly deserves it." Two-time defending one-meter national champion Tom Davidson finished the one-meter competition
in 11th with a score of 325.02. Davidson, a 2001 IU graduate, was in fourth-place heading into the fifth round when he failed
a reverse 2-1/2 somersault tuck and dropped to 11th. Davidson also finished Friday's competition in 11th-place in the men's
three-meter competition. The diving competition will conclude Sunday with the women's synchronized three-meter and men's
platform competitions at the Chandler Aquatic Center in Brisbane, Australia. (6th Picture Kimiko Soldati)

She hurled herself off the platform, creating barely a ripple as her wisp
of a body sliced through the water to cap an inspiring comeback over tragedy, injury and the Chinese.
Wilkinson became the first American woman since 1964 to win the 10-meter platform, rallying from fifth place to end China's
16-year stranglehold on the event. "It's been a long time," said Wilkinson's coach, Ken Armstrong.
"It was time." The 22-year-old Texan took control in the third round with a near-perfect reverse 2
1/2 somersault while the top four — one after another — dove in with a thud. But Wilkinson's
most decisive moment came just before she made the long climb up the tower to perform her next-to-last dive, an inward 2 1/2
somersault pike and the weakest link in her program. She was admittedly nervous about the takeoff
and keeping her head away from the platform. Botching the dive during the morning semifinals eroded her confidence even more.
So, Armstrong pulled his pupil aside and whispered a message in her ear. "Do this for
Hillary," the coach implored. He was referring to Hillary Grivich, a teammate and close friend of
Wilkinson who was killed three years ago in a car accident. "It kind of took me by surprise," Wilkinson
said. "But it was another motivation. It's good to fight for something." She ripped through the water
to earn scores ranging from 8.5 to 9.5, actually increasing her lead. Wilkinson clinched the narrow victory with her final
attempt, relegating Li Na to silver as China failed to win the women's platform for the first time since 1980.
Canada's Anne Montminy took bronze. "Hillary was a good friend to all of us," Wilkinson said.
"She's still with me every day." Wilkinson finished with 543.75 points, just 1.74 points ahead of
Li. Montminy, competing in her third Olympics, earned her first medal with 540.15(7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th,
13th, and 14th picture).
---------------------
But the forecast brightened at the U.S. Olympic
Trials when diving observers began to compare 21-year old Mark Ruiz to Olympic legend Greg Louganis as Ruiz became the first
U.S. diver to qualify in both the three-meter springboard and the 10-meter platform events since Greg Louganis did in 1988
and 1984. Louganis swept the diving events at both Olympic Games.
Ruiz started diving in Puerto Rico when he was nine and continued diving after moving to Orlando,
Florida, at the age of twelve. Ruiz will be joined by another first time Olympian on springboard, Troy Dumais, who overcame
kidney stones the morning of the Olympic Trials final to make the team. David Pichler made his second straight Olympic team
on platform.
Although he won both events at the trials, Ruiz will have some stiff competition when he gets
to Sydney. Dmitry Sautin of Russia was favored to sweep the diving events in Atlanta, but he only won gold on the platform.
Since Atlanta, Sautin has won three gold medals on springboard (1997 European championships, 1997 World Cup and the 1998 worlds)
and two on platform (1997 World Cup and 1998 worlds). Tian Liang of China will be another platform medal contender. Liang
finished behind Sautin at the 1998 world championships and then won the 1999 World Cup, which Sautin missed with chronic back
pain. (15th, 16th, and 17th picture)
